Applicants needed to show that they could build AI data centres with a capacity of at least 500 megawatts by 2030. The government has announced five AI Growth Zones so far. Among them are sites in Lanarkshire, east of Glasgow, and North Tyneside, near Newcastle.
One of the main concerns involves the proposed Lanarkshire development. Early announcements suggested that the project would rely largely on renewable energy generated at the site rather than electricity supplied through the national grid.
However, later information indicated that the facility is expected to connect to Britain's electricity grid instead. The project developer, DataVita, acknowledged that grid power would be required alongside its renewable energy plans.
Further questions have also been raised about the amount of land available for renewable energy development. Current planning documents suggest that the project may not have enough land to build the scale of renewable energy originally discussed.
Electricity supply has become one of the biggest challenges facing AI infrastructure worldwide. Large AI data centres consume huge amounts of electricity and require stable, high-capacity power connections that are often difficult to secure.
Britain already faces pressure on its electricity network. New connections for large industrial projects can take many years because of growing demand across the country. Industry observers say providing priority access for major AI facilities could affect connection times for other developments.
Another project that has attracted attention is Stargate UK in North Tyneside.
The proposed development was intended to become another major AI Growth Zone. However, reports indicate that planning moved forward quickly before a high-profile political visit, raising questions about whether all technical requirements had been fully assessed.
The project also changed after AI company OpenAI withdrew from its planned involvement. Local officials have suggested that the site may not have sufficient electricity capacity or supporting infrastructure for a development of its proposed size.
Questions have also been raised about projected employment figures.
Government estimates suggest that the Lanarkshire project could create around 3,400 jobs. Some independent analysts, however, believe the long-term number of permanent jobs could be much lower because modern data centres rely heavily on automation and require relatively small operating teams once construction is complete.
Funding projections have also received attention. A proposed community investment fund linked to the Lanarkshire project is expected to depend on future revenues generated by the development rather than existing financial commitments.
Investment estimates connected to Stargate UK have also been questioned because projected spending figures are tied to the overall cost of constructing the project instead of confirmed financial backing.
Despite these concerns, AI infrastructure remains a major priority for many governments. Countries around the world are investing heavily in data centres, semiconductor technology, cloud computing, and advanced digital infrastructure to support future economic growth.

Critics say careful planning is needed to ensure projects are supported by realistic funding, reliable electricity supplies, and practical construction plans.
